The piece of the puzzle that certainly has made this possible is clearly, adoption of standards and understanding the value of client side computing. As a developer & technology evangelist I am delighted to spend less time testing interoperability and more time developing functionality. Then presenting this functionality using different presentation models to different devices (desktop/wireless & mobile). This is certainly a win-win solution!

I finally have a print server at home!. I installed UBUNTU on a my 128M RAM laptop and turned it into a print server running CUPS. I now have both my USB printers connected to my laptop, accessible as shared printers on my home network!

Yes, there is a reason to be proud of this "Do it Yourself" (DIY) project, because as simple and possible this sounds, things "didn't quite easily fall in place". Using common sense and reading the documentation made all the difference.

Amy Hoy's session on design interface was good. I really like the side by side comaprison of firefox's home page and opera's home page in terms of look & feel, stimulating thoughts.

OSCON 2006: Microsummaries in Firefox 2

Microsummaries is a new feature in firefox 2 - call it micro syndication !. However there is one big difference here with syndication - microsummaries are read by browsers when they are running unlike syndication feeds read by reader even if a person is not reading their feeds. Other way to look at this is "it is triggered by a user action", so your web logs acurately reflect your traffic and less changes of web servers getting hit.

However, I would like to see 2 things here. 1. On the server side, a "sync time" can be defined and this value will have a higer precedence over the "sync time" defined in the microsummary configuration. 2. This idea is still a "syndication at micro level", may be identify a way to roll this into syndication standard. (just a thought).

Great tool and I am sure, I will use it.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Backup: Cygwin + rsync

I installed Cygwin on my WinXP@work couple of years ago primarily for X11.. few weeks latter acquired a machine to run linux .. and never needed X11 on windows anymore!.

Last week, I added backing up my data on, my linux and windows machines to the "year end high priority TODO list" before the school closes for winter holidays. My requirement spec just had 2 items. One, the process should be automated two, back up to an internal disk drive (instead of external). I just coudn't convince myself to run any of the freeware, I found for Windows online, no matter how convincing they were. I decided to take a look at Cygwin, I am glad I did.

The same setup.exe used to install Cygwin can be used to upgrade and install new apps!. A nice UI walked me through apps I can install taking care of dependency - upgrade was smooth. I installed rsync. I was also suprised to see, all my internal data drives get auto mounted - I could navigate to my C: by typing "cd c:" on the Cygwin bash shell -nice!

I created a shell script that called rsync with a bunch of flags like --delete --verbose etc to backup specific folders on my linux machine to an internal (dedicated) drive - I got it to work!. With some minor changes, got rsync to sync selected files on my c:. I got a kick out of this entire experience and using existing technologies to get my work done!

We are staying in Orlando waiting for Wilma to pass through, before we start driving south to Ft.Lauderdale. As of now, we should be able to fly out of Ft.Lauderdale on wednesday (Oct/26/2005). Our vacation is going good so far. We are making the most of this trip with friendly people (Floridan's) and a positive attitude.

Terrific resource if you are into opensource and MySQL. Check out PlanetMySQL.

I also see MySQL taking a pro-active role in reaching out to the community and promoting services in a very friendly way!. I just can't wait to learn 5.0 and try out the kool features. I just have a few projects to wrap up before I get there - but upgrading to 5.0 is on my radar.

On a personal note, I have been using MySQL since 1999 - running off my redhat 6.X. These days I have multiple instances running with replication !. As a matter of fact SJSU main website and few critical applications are running on MySQL.

Note to MySQL Team: I would love to see some one from your team offer a session in the CATS 2006 conference. Please contact me if you are interested. I keep hearing from staff at various CSU campuses about usinsg MySQL or interested in learning more about it. This a great opportunity to having a technical session and build a community.

Viable options:Sitemap,Ping servers

Following up on my posting yesterday on google sitemaps. I read an interesting article from Jeremy's blog about using existing ping server protocol.

I think both are viable options. Sitemaps gives an opportunity to represent content with rich metadata that can be utilized by search engines. However getting started requires "little initial setup overhead" with a hope of having a "add on" web server module.

Ok, live web - any other thought?

Personalized Homepage:
I just tried out google's personalized homepage - it's clean and easy to use. I got a kick out of the app, when I could drag and drop different modules around - this the koolest thing !. My only recommendation would be to add more functionality to their rss/atom reader.

SiteMaps:
This feature got me thinking. So we are all familiar with robots.txt that politely say "please ignore indexing the following directories". Now how about a similar file that tells, which files keep changing on a the web document root (sound like the underlying reason behind RSS/ATOM) right ?. This is exactly what SiteMaps does ! - On the server side the webmaster generated this sitemap (an xml file, based on open standards, using the google client) and makes it assessible to the public (here the search engine). The search engine that parsers this file and does a better job of indexing. Sounds extremely interesting. The only catch here is, this is "user driven" - a webmaster or some techie needs to start the process. Making this a "feature" of a webserver would be the way to go !.

Backup Awareness Month

Don't forget it is backup awareness month (still ONE more day left in June)

One the other hands, its such a coincidence that I backuped my files last week before upgrading to Tiger and currently working on backing up my wife's Apple PowerBook. As I go through this backup process, I learned 2 important things. One, a "drag and drop" from a folder in your hard drive to an external hard drive may not ALWAYS work ! -- there are a lot of files names with special characters in them. How the external hard drive handles these files names is "so product dependent". In my case an iomega USB external HDD hard drive displayed an alert box and stopped the entire copy, when encountered a file name with special character(s). Two, use a backup tool to do the "time consuming and boring" task of backing up. The time invested in evaluating and finding the one that works for you, is truly well worth it at the end of the day !

Upgraded to OS X Tiger

Yeah !, upgraded to Tiger. The core upgrade took approximately 35 minutes !

After initial login, I went through my checklist and all my apps and documents were working !. I had problems with Safari as saft plugin was not compatible. Quick Googling
got me a valuable message thread and off I am working on tiger.

I read an interesting article in the San Francisco Chronicle last week on online banking.

My key points here are -
1. Learn and build awareness
2. Use hard to crack (but meaninful and easy for YOU to remember) login and password
3. Avoid using public access computers (like internet cafe,library)
4. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure - you are connected to a trusted access point
5. Keep you web browser up to date (this is the KEY). Secondly customize the default browser setting to store no cache and delete cookies when done with your session.
6. If providing login and password always check for https in the url.

I heard about GeoCache while talking to one of the bloggers today at the KRON4 bay area bloggers meet-up. Ok guess, what do you thing geocache is ?. My first though was, something to do with geomapping and caching information - partially right !

Check out the website of GeoCaching and find it for yourself. Anyways, I find the idea of leaving a stash in specific GPS coordinates quite interesting and extremely new - as long it is fun.

I just returned back from the KRON4 bay area blogger meet-up. I was delighted to hear Mark (KRON4 top guy) talk about understanding the importance of the blogsphere and willing to exploring it. I will be looking forward to see what's next on KRON.

Presenting at WeTEC conference

Last week, I was in Monterey presenting at the The Wireless Community & Mobile User Conference. Iwas presenting with Dr. Malu Roldan from the College of Business. We were talking about Stretching classroom boundries with mobile technology & syndication.

We had a great time preparing and presenting. We also got a good response. I was able to successfully record our entire presentation, which I am planning to clean up and publish as podcast next week. I got a kick out of geo tagging each item ! in the syndication piece of this project.

Just joined flickr.

I have always used Yahoo! Photos as a great way to publish (and even request prints) photos. It has taken quite some time to persuade myself into joining flickr.

Few quick notes on my first day here -> Easy way to share pictures with zoom-in and zoopm-out features, download right to your desktop without loosing image resolution (different than Yahoo! photos) and plugin to your blog - works for me!.

I now see, why Yahoo! acquired flickr.

NSF grant for fundamental cyber security research

A consortium of eight universities -- including the University of California-Berkeley, Stanford, San Jose State and Mills College -- has received a $19 million National Science Foundation grant for fundamental cyber-security research.

The funding, announced Monday, is to develop new technologies to protect the nation's computer systems from cyber-attacks while improving reliability. UC-Berkeley will lead the effort.

Joining those campuses will be Carnegie Mellon University, which operates a West Coast campus in the educational research park at NASA/Ames Research Center in Mountain View; Cornell University; Smith College; and Vanderbilt University. RSS Readers: What is your preference ?

Good question, isn't it ?.

There are so many readers that, how do you what is the best for you to get started ? or if you are using one, how do you know if you are missing out on some really kool features ? - tricky question isn't it ?. I had the same feeling few years ago, when I signed up for my internet email addresses, now the same question but in a different realm.

On tip (my 2 cents): Identify your requirements first - web based or desktop, free or not, level of granularity, how well other third party applications integrate. I started using My Yahoo and then migrated to Bloglines. I met Michael from Rojo at the Technorati celebrations couple of days ago, you may want to check it out.

My experience with Blogger so far

This is my first blog and Blogger is keeping this novice blogger well informed (with documention and friendly user interface) on creating,managing,tracking posts. If, I were to make one recommendation right now, it would be - bump up your hardware.

Increase your awareness: Surfers urged to take phishing IQ test

I first read this here. Take the test and don't forget to learn more about each question.

I believe, as technology evolves and makes things easier there is an assumption made that, users (including end users) will also evolve with technology and have a more open mind in adopting them. As technology evolves, we also learn more about different virus,worms and malicious attacks. We educate ourselves (or get help) to be more cautious and careful. I think this test, is a great way to increase awareness.

Talking about browsers, security and improving self awareness, I felt the need for offering a "do it yourself" workshops, primarily targetting end users with little or no computer experience. I got 2 collegues at work interested in this and approval at work for our first workshop. We presented last month on Computer Security: Prevention & Verification and my contribution was on browser security. We got a terrific feedback and are offering it again.
